Occlusal balance is frequently not checked during regular dental check up, after restoration, after denture installation or other dental procedures. Dentists often concentrate on centric relation and are unaware of the lateral movement of the lower jaw when it’s in function. Aging and habitual unilateral chewing can contribute to massive occlusal abrasions that will in turn lead to sharp cuspal edges and endodontic involvement.
Loose dentures, periodontium breakdown, fracture of both restoration and tooth, cheek and tongue biting, and TMJ problems can be prevented through keen diagnosis, tooth recontouring, spoit grinding or raising the vertical dimension.
