There are 4 basic designs of bridge, the difference being the type of support provided ateach end of the pontic. The same name is called to the design, however many pontics in the span and abutment teeth splinted at one end of the span.

The four basic designs are similar whether the bridge is conventional or a minimal preration type. Two or more of the four basic designs can be combined. It is also possible to combine conventional and minimal preparation retainers in the same bridge.

Of the four basic designs, three may be either conventional or minimal preparation types.

The four basic designs are:
Fixed-fixed bridge
Fixed-movable bridge
Cantilever bridge
Springcantilever bridge

When repairing crowns and Fixed Partial Dentures, optimum adhesion between the repair materials and the prosthesis surfaces must be achieved. Roughening the surface of exposed metal or ceramics, using a combination of sandblasting and hydrofluoric acid gives the best results.

Occlusal balance is frequently not checked during regular dental check up, after restoration, after denture installation or other dental procedures. Dentists often concentrate on centric relation and are unaware of the lateral movement of the lower jaw when it’s in function. Aging and habitual unilateral chewing can contribute to massive occlusal abrasions that will in turn lead to sharp cuspal edges and endodontic involvement.

Loose dentures, periodontium breakdown, fracture of both restoration and tooth, cheek and tongue biting, and TMJ problems can be prevented through keen diagnosis, tooth recontouring, spoit grinding or raising the vertical dimension.
